Code coverage gate skill for Claude Code — Codecov status, fail_under

Finds why your coverage check stays green when coverage drops

Who it's for

For teams that made a Codecov or pytest/Jest coverage check a required status on pull requests and trust it to block untested merges.

What breaks, and when

With informational: true the Codecov status can never fail the build, and with || true a failing gate reports success, so PRs with no tests merge green.

What it printed on the bundled example

== Code Coverage Gate — 13 findings (9 errors, 4 warnings) in 5 files · 14 rules
  ERROR .github/workflows/test.yml:12 [ci_continue_on_error]
continue-on-error: true — this step is allowed to fail, so the coverage gate under it cannot stop a merge.
fix: remove continue-on-error from the coverage step
  ERROR .github/workflows/test.yml:13 [ci_swallow_exit]
the exit code of the coverage command is discarded with || true, so a failing gate reports success.
fix: let the command's exit code reach the runner
  WARN .github/workflows/test.yml:17 [codecov_fail_ci_false]
fail_ci_if_error: false — an upload that never arrives is silently treated as a green build.

What you get

Install

Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ (all projects) or your-repo/.claude/skills/ (one repo), then ask Claude Code: "Our coverage check on pull requests is always green, even on a PR that added no tests. Can you look at our CI and coverage config and tell me whether the gate can actually fail? Don't edit anything yet.". Needs Node 16+.

unzip code-coverage-gate-check.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

Ask Claude

“Our coverage check on pull requests is always green, even on a PR that added no tests. Can you look at our CI and coverage config and tell me whether the gate can actually fail? Don't edit anything yet.”

What it does not do

Reads config and CI files only; it does not run tests, measure coverage or call the Codecov API.

FAQ

What is a Claude Code skill?

A folder with a SKILL.md and scripts that Claude Code loads when your request matches it. You ask in plain words and Claude runs the scanner the skill carries.

How is this different from asking Claude without the skill?

The skill carries a dated rule table and a scanner that reads every file, so Claude quotes the exact date and line instead of answering from memory.

Does it send my code anywhere?

Reads config and CI files only; it does not run tests, measure coverage or call the Codecov API.

How do I install it?

Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ (all projects) or your-repo/.claude/skills/ (one repo), then ask Claude Code: "Our coverage check on pull requests is always green, even on a PR that added no tests. Can you look at our CI and coverage config and tell me whether the gate can actually fail? Don't edit anything yet.". Needs Node 16+.

What do I get when I buy?

The zip. On Whop it is in your library as a download lesson with the zip attached; on Gumroad it is the product file.
