Tiptap migration check: what TinyMCE costs you in 2026

For engineering leads whose closed-source app still loads TinyMCE from Tiny Cloud. TinyMCE 7.0 (20 March 2024) moved to GPL2+, and Tiny now bills TinyMCE 4, 5 and 6 extra: a legacy flat fee of $30 (Essential) or $55 (Professional) a month and $65 instead of $40 per extra 1,000 editor loads. Type your loads and your migration hours.

Where does your code still pull TinyMCE? (line finder)

Paste package.json, package-lock.json, yarn.lock, pnpm-lock.yaml or your tinymce.init / <script> file. It stays in your browser. Each tinymce line is listed with its line number; a TinyMCE 4/5/6 version sets the calculator above to legacy.

Why not just read Tiny's pricing page?

Tiny's page lists plan prices but never adds the TinyMCE 4/5/6 legacy flat fee and the $65 legacy overage to your own load count, and chatbots still quote the pre-7.0 MIT licence. Your answer here is free, on screen, as often as you like; you pay only if you want the workbook for the whole company.

Tiptap Migration Check — TinyMCE Legacy Fee & Licence Cost Calculator (2026)

Migrate from TinyMCE to Tiptap: what the legacy fee costs you in 2026

TinyMCE 7.0 was released on 20 March 2024, and from that release on TinyMCE is licensed under GPL2+. Tiny's own release post says it plainly: if your product does not comply with GPL2+, you revise your usage, move to a cloud-hosted commercial plan, or move to a self-hosted commercial plan. Many closed-source teams did none of the three. They stayed on TinyMCE 6.

Staying is not free. Tiny's pricing page, read on 2026-10-08, calls TinyMCE 4, 5 and 6 legacy versions and bills them extra. On annual billing the legacy flat fee is $30 a month on Essential and $55 a month on Professional. Extra editor loads cost $65 per 1,000 on a legacy version instead of $40 per 1,000 on a supported one.

Here is what that does to one real-sized app. Professional plan, 20,000 editor loads included, 32,000 loads a month, still on TinyMCE 6. That is 12 extra blocks at $65, so $780 of overage, plus the $55 legacy fee, plus the $145 plan fee. The Tiny bill is $980 a month and $11,760 a year. Of that, $4,260 a year exists only because the app still loads TinyMCE 6.

Now the other side of the ledger. Tiptap's core is MIT-licensed, so a self-hosted Tiptap editor carries no licence fee. The cost is your own developers' time. If the move takes 120 hours and you price an hour at $65.38, the BLS 2025 median for software developers, the migration costs $7,845.60 once. Against a $980 monthly bill, that pays back in 8.0 months. Over three years the difference is $27,434.40.

The answer changes with your numbers, which is why a rule of thumb does not work. Upgrade the same app to TinyMCE 7 instead and the legacy extra disappears: 12 blocks at $40 is $480, the bill drops to $625 a month, and the same 120-hour Tiptap move now takes 12.6 months to pay back. A smaller help-centre CMS on Essential, 7,400 loads a month and still on TinyMCE 5, pays $3,648 a year, of which $1,260 is the legacy extra; a 60-hour move costs $3,922.80 and pays back in 12.9 months.

Why not just read the pricing page? Because it lists plans but never adds the legacy flat fee and the $65 overage to your own load count, and chatbots still describe TinyMCE under its old MIT licence.

The free calculator does the whole job for one app, in your browser, as often as you like. You type your monthly editor loads and your migration hours; the plan values are filled from Tiny's page. It also has a line finder: paste your package.json, package-lock.json, yarn.lock, pnpm-lock.yaml or the file that calls tinymce.init, and it lists every tinymce line with its line number. A TinyMCE 4, 5 or 6 version flips the calculator to legacy. A license_key 'gpl' line is flagged, because GPL mode means your code ships under GPL2+ terms. Each finding comes with the install line from Tiptap's own docs: npm install @tiptap/react @tiptap/pm @tiptap/starter-kit for React, or @tiptap/core for plain JavaScript.

What the free page does not do is the company view. The workbook adds an Apps sheet with 25 rows, one per product, with totals for the legacy surcharge and the migration payback, and a price-table sheet stamped with the source URL and the date it was read, so finance can check every figure.

Start with one app. Open the Tiny dashboard, copy last month's editor loads, and see your own number.

    Questions people ask

What does this Tiptap migration check calculate?

It prices your TinyMCE cloud plan the way Tiny bills it: included editor loads, $40 per extra 1,000 loads ($65 on TinyMCE 4, 5 or 6), and the legacy flat fee of $30 (Essential) or $55 (Professional) a month on annual billing. Then it sets that bill against your own migration hours to Tiptap and shows the payback in months.

    Who is this calculator for?

Engineering leads and CTOs of closed-source SaaS products that still load TinyMCE from Tiny Cloud, especially teams that froze on TinyMCE 6 when TinyMCE 7.0 (20 March 2024) moved to GPL2+. You need one number for the budget meeting: what staying costs a year, and what moving to Tiptap costs once.

Why not just read Tiny's pricing page or ask a chatbot?

Tiny's page lists the plan prices, but it does not add the legacy flat fee and the $65 legacy overage to your own load count. A chatbot quotes old TinyMCE 6 MIT terms or guesses the overage. This page uses the figures printed on tiny.cloud/pricing on 2026-10-08 and your own loads.

What is free and what does the $21 file add?

Free, in the browser, as often as you like: the full answer for one app, plus a paste box that lists every tinymce line in your package.json or init file with its line number and the Tiptap install line. The $21 one-time workbook adds a 25-app portfolio sheet with totals and a dated price-table sheet for finance.

How does $21 compare with the alternative?

The yardstick is a developer's own time: the BLS 2025 median for software developers is $65.38 an hour, so half an hour of pricing work by hand already costs more than the file. On the worked example (Professional plan, 32,000 editor loads a month, TinyMCE 6) staying adds $4,260 a year, and the 120-hour move to Tiptap ($7,845.60) pays back in 8.0 months.
