Shopify Profit Calculator 2026 — premium & international card fees by plan

Net profit per order after the real 2026 Shopify Payments rates: a premium card costs 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic, not 2.9% + 30¢, and international cards add 1% — a flat-rate calculator overstates your margin.

Why your margin is lower than a flat 2.9%

Shopify Payments does not charge every order 2.9% + 30¢. Shopify's US pricing page lists a separate online premium card rate and +1% for international cards. With the example store above (Basic, $52 orders, 30% premium cards, 8% international cards) the real fee is $1.94 per order, not $1.81 — $52.00 a month at 400 orders that a flat-rate calculator never shows.

The fee also sets your ad ceiling: once the product, shipping, Payments fee and plan share are paid, $25.46 is left per order. Spend more than that on ads and each order loses money — that is a break-even ROAS of 2.04.

What the free calculators miss

Free Shopify profit calculators apply one flat 2.9% + 30¢. They do not split premium and international cards, they do not change the rate when you change plan, and they do not show what a third-party gateway (for example a PayPal-only checkout) adds: 2% of sales on Basic — $416.00 a month in the example.

Shopify Profit Calculator 2026 — premium & international card fees by plan

Most Shopify profit calculators make the same quiet assumption: every order pays 2.9% + 30¢ to Shopify Payments. Shopify's own US pricing page, read on 7 October 2026, says otherwise. It lists three online rates. On the Basic plan a standard card costs 2.9% + 30¢, a premium card costs 3.5% + 30¢, and an international card adds 1%. Grow is 2.7%, 3.3% and +1%. Advanced is 2.5%, 3.1% and +1%.

That gap looks small on one order. Here is what it does to a real-looking store. Take a Basic store with a $52 average order, $16 product cost, $8.50 for the shipping label and packaging, $14 of ad spend per order and 400 orders a month. Say 30% of customers pay with a premium card and 8% with an international card. The flat assumption gives a fee of $1.81 per order. With the card mix the fee is $1.94. The difference is $0.13 per order, or $52.00 a month that no flat-rate calculator shows you.

The fee is not the main story, though. The main story is the ad ceiling. After the product, the shipping, the Payments fee and the store's share of the plan fee are paid, $25.46 is left from each $52 order. That is the most you can spend on ads to win one order before it loses money. Divide the order value by it and you get a break-even ROAS of 2.04. If your Meta or Google campaign reports a ROAS below that, every sale it brings in costs you money, even when the dashboard looks green.

The same store makes $11.46 profit per order, a 22.04% net margin, and $4,584.00 a month.

Now change three things. Move the store to Grow, raise ad spend to $30 per order and let half the customers pay with premium cards. The card rate drops to 2.7%, so the fee falls to $1.90. But ad spend is now above the $25.34 ceiling for that setup. Profit is -$4.66 per order and -$1,864.00 a month. Nothing in a flat-rate calculator would warn you that the cheaper card rate does not save this store.

Plan choice is the second question people get wrong. Grow costs $105 a month against $39 for Basic on monthly billing, and it lowers the standard card rate by 0.2 points. At a $52 order that saving pays for the higher plan fee from about 635 orders a month, or 481 orders on yearly billing ($79 against $21). At 1,200 orders a month the same store makes $13,836.00 on Basic and $13,884.00 on Grow, so Grow earns $48 more. Advanced only beats Grow from 2,827 orders a month on monthly billing.

The third trap is the checkout itself. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. For the example store on Basic that is $416.00 a month, before the gateway charges anything. At 1,200 orders it is $1,248.00 a month.

The free calculator on our page does all of this for your own numbers. Type your order value, product cost, shipping, ad spend and monthly orders. Plan and card mix are already filled in, and you can change them from your Shopify Payments payout details. You get 12 results: the card rate for your plan, the blended rate for your card mix, the fee per order, the extra cost of premium and international cards, the plan fee per order, profit per order, margin, monthly profit, the monthly cost of premium and international cards, the maximum ad cost per order, break-even ROAS, and what a third-party gateway would add. Nothing is uploaded.

If you sell more than one product, the workbook runs the same 2026 rates on up to 30 SKUs and compares Basic, Grow and Advanced at your volume. Rates change, so check the rates in your own Shopify admin before you set a ROAS target on them.

Questions people ask

What does this Shopify profit calculator work out?

It takes your order value, product cost, shipping, ad spend, monthly orders, plan fee and card mix and returns 12 results: blended Shopify Payments fee, the extra premium and international card cost, profit per order, margin, monthly profit, maximum ad cost per order, break-even ROAS and a third-party gateway comparison.

Who is it for?

US Shopify store owners on Basic, Grow or Advanced who use Shopify Payments and buy traffic with Meta, Google or TikTok ads. If you set a target ROAS or decide prices from a margin number, this is the number that has to be right.

Why not use a free Shopify profit calculator?

Most free calculators apply a single 2.9% + 30¢. Shopify's 2026 US pricing page lists a separate online premium card rate (3.5% + 30¢ on Basic) and +1% for international cards, so a flat-rate calculator overstates margin whenever part of your customers pay with premium or foreign cards.

What is free?

Everything in the web calculator: all 12 results for your own numbers, unlimited times, no account and no email. Nothing is blurred or locked. The paid file is the workbook you keep, with a 30-SKU sheet and a Basic vs Grow vs Advanced plan comparison.

What does the alternative cost?

The alternative is an e-commerce bookkeeper rebuilding your margins by the hour, or keeping a flat-rate guess that hides the premium-card cost. The workbook is a one-time payment of $21, not a subscription, and you see your own answer free before paying.
